Quiero dedicar este "breve" artículo al programa Vulcanus (con u), que ha cambiado el curso de mi vida durante los últimos meses.
I just want to take the opportunity to give a "brief" explanation about the programme Vulcanus (beginning with u), which has lately changed the course of my life.
Como quizás ya sepaís, he sido elegido para participar en el programa internacional Vulcanus in Japan. ¿En qué consiste el programa? ¿qué se supone qué voy a hacer? Ahora intentaré explicar lo poco que sé de momento, sin embargo también teneís el link en el título de la entrada.
As you may already know, I've been selected to participate in the international programme Vulcanus in Japan. What does it consist of? What am I supposed to do there? I'll try to explain the little information I know, however, you also have a link on the title.
El programa tiene sus inicios en 1987 y como objetivo dar la oportunidad a los mejores estudiantes de Europa de aprender la cultura, lengua y forma de hacer negocios japoneses. Esto se realiza a través de una estancia de 1 año en Japón dividida en 1 primera semana de intensivo en cultura y modales japoneses, más 4 cuatro meses de intensivo (5 horas al día) de japonés, ambos en Tokyo. Después de estos cursos, a partir de principios de Enero del 2009, empieza el período de práticas en la empresa que te ha seleccionado.
The programme was launched in 1987 with the aim of giving the best European students the opportunity to learn the Japanese culture, language and business knowhow through a 1-year-stay in Japan. The stay is divided into three parts, a 1-week-cultural seminary , a 4-month-language course, both in Tokyo. After them, we're starting the internship at the company which selected you, by the beginning of January.
El programa está coordinado por la Comision Europea y el Gobierno Japonés, con la sede central en Tokyo y la delegación europea en Bruselas. Los principales criterios de selección se basan, creo recordar, en el expediente académico, los informes de tus mentores, tu vocación emprendedora y viajera y tu conocimiento del inglés (cosas que supongo yo cumplía bastante bien, modestia aparte).
The programme is coordinated by the European Comission and the Japanese Government, with headquarters in Tokyo and the branch in Brussels. The main selection criteria is based, what I can remember, on your school qualifications, the opinion of your professors, your entrepreneur and traveller spirit and, obviously, your English knowledge (qualities I thing I had, sincerely).
El proceso de selección es bastante largo y pesado, pero la espera recompensa. Para ser breve, hay una primera preselección pasando de miles de aplicantes de toda la Unión a tan sólo 150, dando paso a la selección definitiva. La primera selección la lleva a cabo la organización desde Bruselas, basándose únicamente en los informes presentados y SOBRE TODO, en el expediente académico, pero no siempre éste es un factor determinante (no hace falta tener todo excelentes). La selección definitiva la realiza la empresa, y en el siguiente párrafo comento esto.
The selection proceedure is quite long and tough, but it's worth waiting. I'll be brief, there's a first selection going from thousands of applicants to just 150 from throughout Europe, then the final selection begins. The first selection is carried out by the organization from Brussels and only based on the documentation sent. Above all on your qualifications, however that's not always a determinant factor (there's no need to have all excellent). The final proceedure is the company's job, let's move on to the next paragraf.
Una vez has sido preseleccionado, la organización te muestra todas la ofertas de prácticas que hay para el próximo curso, todas las empresas y los puestos que ofrecen. Desde Bruselas te recomiendan un puesto de prácticas en una determinada empresa, el más adecuado a tu perfil. En ese momento tú decides, pudiendo únicamente aplicar para 2 puestos de prácticas (2 trabajos diferentes), con un 33,33% periodo de posibilidades de ser escogido. Es aquí cuando interviene la empresa, entre otra información has de escribir una carta destinada al coordinador de cada puesto de trabajo, y ellos son los que realmente te eligen basándose en toda la documentación presentada. Para el curso 2009-2010 se han ofertado 46 puestos, que es el número de estudiantes que participamos, sin haber realizado ninguna entrevista previa!!!
Once you've been pre-selected, the organization show you all the internship offers available for the next season, I mean all the companies and positions. You're recommended one offer by Brussels anyway, the one which best suits your profile. Then you decide, bearing in mind that only 2 different offers can be applied for, with a 33,33% period probability of being selected. At that point the company appear, you've to write a motivation letter to them so that they end up selecting you, a decision based, as usual, on the documentation sent. It has been offered 46 internship positions for the next season, 2009-2010, the same number of students participating without having been interviewed!
El 1 de setiembre del 2009 comienza la aventura en Tokyo, mi residencia durante los 4 meses siguientes. Allà por el 18-19 de diciembre finalizaremos los cursos y tendremos vacaciones hasta el 3 de Enero, cuando entonces comenzará la estancia en la empresa hasta finales de agosto. En mi caso, he sido seleccionado por la empresa HITACHI GE (sí, sí, la de las teles) para realizar las prácticas con ellos en una central nuclear en la ciudad de HITACHI CITY, donde la multinacional se fundó (empezó como una tienda de electrodomésticos, ojo al dato). De momento apenas se nada, todo es muy confidencial y la información la dan en cuenta gotas, lo poco que se es que quieren que obtenga una visión global de cómo funcionan los negocios japoneses y en particular una central nuclear desde del punto de vista técnico (diseño y planificación de todo un poquito).
The adventure is starting on the 1st of September 2009 in Tokyo, my residence for the next 4 months. By the 18th of December we'll have finished our courses and the period of holidays will follow until the 3 rd of January, when finally the internship begins lasting 8 months , until the end of August. Particularly, I've been selected by HITACHI GE (yes, the TV manufacturer) to work in a Nuclear Plant in HITACHI CITY, where the multinational company was founded (they started selling appliances, amazing). My information is scarce for the moment, confidential and given drop by drop. The only thing I know is that they want me to acquaire an overview of how Japanese businesses work and specifically a nuclear plant from the technical point of view (design and planning, a bit of everything)
No he comentado antes que el programa también es una beca! La empresa te proporciona alojamiento gratuito en sus apartamentos durante todo el año (Tokyo e Hitachi) y junto con la organización te becan con 2 millones de JPY, unos 16000 euros, que para comidas y transporte hay de sobras. Para mi la mejor beca no es el dinero, si no la oportunidad y el prestigio que me dan.
I've not mentioned yet that the programme includes a schoolarship! The company provides you with accomodation for free in their apartments during all the stay (Tokyo and Hitachi), and in association with the Organization they give you 2 MJPY, around 16000 euros, for meals and transport, totally enough. To be honest, the best of the schoolarship is not the money, but the opportunity and the prestige given.
